Explorer Post Number 99

Interested in firefighting? Join the Aurora Fire Department Explorer Post 99 to learn the academics and fundamentals in what it takes to be a firefighter!

Program Overview

Aurora Fire Department Explorer Post 99 provides the education and skill sets needed to prepare you to become a future firefighter. The curriculum has been designed to establish the foundation - through the educational process and physical firefighting training - to prepare and teach you about a career in firefighting.

History

Founded in March 2002, AFD Explorer Post 99 was comprised of 8 teenagers who aspired to become firefighters. The program is instructed by our very own Aurora firefighters.  As of 2023, twenty-five explorers have graduated the program with honors and have become Aurora firefighters. Hundreds more have become firefighters, either locally or around the country, thanks to the training and the personal development acquired through the program.

Why Aurora Fire Department

AFD Explorer Post 99 uses the Basic Operating Firefighting curriculum from the office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.  This curriculum includes classroom, hands-on exercises, and live fire training.  As an AFD Explorer, you will learn what it takes to be an Aurora firefighter.

Along with an advanced training program, an AFD explorer will be given the opportunity to take part in the ride-along program, allowing an explorer to ride on AFD apparatus to emergencies with on-duty firefighters.

Meetings occur every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 9pm at Aurora Fire Department Central Station: 75 N. Broadway, Aurora, IL 60505, or Kane County Training Association Facility: 300 Butterfield Rd., North Aurora, IL 60542.
