Grilling on Decks of Multi-Unit Complexes

Open-Flames Not Allowed

Owners and Property Managers of Multi-Unit complexes please be advised: Grilling on decks of multi-unit complexes using open-flame cooking devices is not allowed in the City of Aurora.

The City of Aurora, Code of Ordinances, Chapter 12 Buildings and Building Regulations, Article II.-Building Codes-Division I Generally- 2009 International Code Council Series Adopted

International Fire Code, First Edition, 2009 and Appendices:
308.1.4 Open-flame cooking devices. Charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet (3048 mm) of combustible construction.

Exceptions

  • 1- and 2-family dwellings.
  • Where buildings, balconies and decks are protected by an automatic sprinkler system.
  • Liquefied petroleum (LP) gas cooking devices having LP-gas container with a water capacity not greater than 21/2 pounds [nominal 1 pound (0.454 kg) LP-gas capacity.


An alternative method of grilling that would be acceptable to the City of Aurora would be any type of electric grill. The decision to allow or not allow this alternative method of grilling rests solely with the owners, property managers or governing associations of these multi-unit complexes. Some complexes have chosen to incorporate these restrictions into their tenant leases. Contact this office if you have any questions.
