Traffic Tickets

When a person is issued a citation by a police officer, that violation will be charged as either a local ordinance violation or a State of Illinois statue violation. The type of charge as well as the location where the violation took place will determine which court will hear the citation.

To see if a citation is written as a local ordinance violation or a state statue violation, look at the top left hand corner of the citation. The “People of the State of Illinois” box will be checked for state statute violations and the “City of Aurora, Illinois” box will be checked for local ordinance violation. The county where the violation occurred is located at the top of the citation.

The violator will be given a court date that is listed at the bottom of the citation (Except state statute violations in DuPage County. In these cases a court date will be mailed to the violator). Also at the bottom of the citation will be an indication if a court appearance is required. If a court appearance is not required, the blue copy of the citation must be completed and mailed to the appropriate circuit clerk’s office.
