Aurora Ranked Among Safest Cities in America
Published on October 22, 2025
Aurora, IL – The City of Aurora has been named one of the safest cities in the United States, ranking #33 overall and #17 in the category of “Home & Community Safety” in WalletHub’s 2025 Safest Cities in America study.
The national study compared 182 of the country’s largest cities using 41 indicators across three main categories: home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety. Aurora’s top-20 placement in the home and community category highlights the city’s strong commitment to public safety and the combined efforts of its police officers, firefighters, emergency medical professionals, and engaged residents.
The study takes factors such as serious crimes per capita, traffic and drug-related fatalities, and the ratio of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics per capita into account. It also considers how safe residents feel in their neighborhoods, making Aurora’s high ranking a reflection of both measurable safety outcomes and public confidence in local first responders.
Just a few decades ago, national headlines portrayed Aurora as one of the most dangerous cities in America per capita — a stark contrast to the recognition the city receives today. This progress reflects years of sustained commitment by public safety professionals, city leadership, and residents working together to make Aurora a safer, stronger community.
“Aurora is now one of the safest cities in the United States because of the dedicated men and women who serve at the Aurora Police Department and the community that stands behind us,” said Chief Matt Thomas. “The equipment, training, and technology we rely on — along with the resources that support them — are essential tools that help us protect our city every day. Our residents have made their voices clear: they do not want crime or violence in their neighborhoods. Together, we’ve worked to drive those numbers down, and we’ll keep using every resource available to make Aurora even safer.”
Aurora’s continued investment in public safety staffing, training, and technology — paired with strong community partnerships — remains a driving force behind the city’s progress.
“Public safety is built on preparation and partnership,” said Fire Chief David McCabe. “Our firefighters and paramedics are part of a system that keeps Aurora safe — ready to respond to emergencies, prevent harm, and support our residents when it matters most. This ranking reflects the strength of that commitment citywide.”
