Chief Matt Thomas
Chief Matt Thomas began his law enforcement career with the Park Ridge Police Department before joining the Aurora Police Department in 2002. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2008 and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant in 2017. In that role, he served as the K-9 Coordinator, Area One Afternoon Lieutenant, and Central Services Lieutenant, and contributed to the department’s Employee Review Board. In 2021, he was promoted to Commander and oversaw the Support Services Bureau. Later that same year, he was elevated to Deputy Chief, where he played a key role in modernizing internal systems and enhancing operational support across divisions.
Appointed in 2025 as the 43rd Chief of Police in the department’s history, he brings a focus on community partnerships, fair leadership, and prioritizing the wellness and professional development of department personnel.
